Finley’s Story

Finley was born a full term, healthy baby boy on March 22, 2016. Within a few hours a nurse noticed his breathing was becoming a bit laboured so he was admitted to the NICU and the next day was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia.
After a course of antibiotics he improved slightly, but then his breathing became much more laboured. When he was 6 days old more tests were conducted including an ECHO which gave us the terrible news,
Finley had Coarctation of the Aorta and would need heart surgery.
The next day he was airlifted to Edmonton to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. We waited another week in the NICU until he had his surgery. During this time we became aware of other heart defects Finley had. At two weeks old Finn’s Coarctation was successfully repaired and he began his painful recovery. After another week and a half of recovering, he was discharged and able to go home! Finley’s other defects include a VSD which healed without intervention, a Bicuspid Aortic Valve, and LSVC.
He has checkups once a year with the SK Cardiology team and so far his heart looks and sounds great! He is a happy, healthy and busy two year old boy, a little brother, and our very own heart warrior!
